Oral hygiene and dietary advice

Dental Hygeinist Musselburgh Scotland UK

This is a part of Dentistry that is often neglected. In many ways it is the most important element of your dental treatment.

Our aim is to provide each of our patients with high quality preventative care and to achieve a lifetime of the best oral health for all our patients.

Our Dental Hygienist, June Easton, is specially trained in all aspects of preventative dentistry and has more than 26 years experience in the profession. June has also spent time teaching dental hygiene and periodontal therapy at Edinburgh Dental Hospital.

She joined the practice in 1998 and is a key member of our team, helping our patients to keep their mouth and teeth healthy and offer expertise in dealing with gum disease and ongoing advice for good oral health. This will enable you to achieve continued dental health, a fresh healthy smile and help you keep your teeth for life.

Hygiene is vital to the prevention of tooth decay and gum disease. We advise all our patients to see our hygienist regularly, ideally every three months, for fresh confident breath and a sparkling clean smile. Once June is happy with your dental health these visits can be as few as twice a year, this regime is strongly advised.

Dental Hygeine Musselburgh Edinburgh Scotland UKIn addition, our hygienist will assess how well you are caring for your teeth, and if required will help you improve brushing and flossing techniques, or show you how to tackle any difficult areas. She will also advise on problems such as bleeding gums or bad breath and will introduce you to a programme that will help cure it. Poor gum health is now known to be related to heart problems later in life. The hygienist may also suggest giving up smoking as this will reduce staining. Recent research has also shown that smokers suffer more gum disease and lose teeth more readily than non-smokers.

Why doesn’t the dentist do this work?
Some dentists will carry out this type of work and we will do this if we find that this is what will suit you. However, June, our hygienist, has been specially trained to carry out scaling and polishing and can spend more quality time with you. She is also expert at teaching you how to look after your teeth and gums.

What Can I Do To Help The Hygienist?
You can do a great deal to help yourself and the hygienist. You are in control of your mouth between visits to the practice and ongoing home care is incredibly important. You will be shown the most efficient ways to remove plaque.

June is keen to re-educate patients on how to make the best use of toothbrushes, dental floss and inter-dental brushes and cleaning aids. There are many products available and we will recommend those that are appropriate for your individual needs.
